Eilera and Loïc Tézénas both come from the metal music scene. After years of classical guitar and singing for Eilera and of Jazz guitar studies for Loïc, both of them took the path of melodic metal, mainly with the bands Kalisia and Chrysalis for Loïc and with Chrysalis for Eilera.
With Kalisia Loïc worked on a mini-CD which was released in 1996 by French label Adipocere Records. Their other recording was a concept-album. In Chrysalis Eilera was one of the guitarists – together with Loïc ! - and she used to compose the music and write the lyrics. A mini-CD was recorded and released in 2000 (Adipocere Records) and the recording of an album had been planned for September 2003… Until Eilera decided in July 2003 to put an end to the Chrysalis adventure and focus on her work with Loïc. With these two bands, Eilera and Loïc got a good experience of recording and of the stage, as well as great memories. Yet, they soon desired to see some different aspects of music and go further. Their collaboration on a side-project called Bliss begins in 2000 with a first home-studio recording. The music at that time was a mixing of electronic sounds with metal music. Several concerts follow the recording of the demo, revealing a personality which surprises and attracts the public's attention. Some musicians – cello player, guitarist, keyboards player and drummer – work with them on these occasions. In 2002, Loïc and Eilera record their second demo, still in home studio. It is in 2003 that Eilera and Loïc finally find their identity and the direction to take. The metal roots can still be felt in the general atmosphere and in the sound of the guitars, but they are used with a lot more delicacy than before. The same with the electronic elements, used in an original and innovating manner. The Celtic colour which could be slightly felt in the previous recordings is now clearly part of the Eilera's style. The result of all this is an album which is original, easy-listening and innovating at the same time, of a very rich, delicate and refined music carried by an uncommon and strong-tempered voice. Eilera spent one and a half month in London after the release of 'Facettes', trying to reach the 'right people', which wasn't really successful. She soon realised she would be a lot more constructive back home. Thus, the duet started to work on the live version of the songs in the summer 2003. They decided the first gigs would be acoustic. The songs would be played by acoustic guitars, cello, percussions and vocals. They also worked actively on doing promotion on the web. This, among other things, led them to a distribution contract with Musicast for France. In the same period of time, Eilera worked on their first video for the song ‘Inside my Cave'. The video was watched by Nathalie Campos who works at Montpellier's townhall. She immediately thought of Eilera to support the presentation of Marc Joseph Sigaud's work. Being a director in virtual images, he needed a musical background during the presentation of his short movie. The collaboration worked very well and was a big success. The visual qualities of Eilera's music were definitely underlined. On February 20th, Eilera was invited for a special showcase at Montpellier's FNAC. On this occasion, Eilera and Loïc were interviewed for French television France3 . (Regional programmation). December 2004: Eilera and Loïc Tézénas signed a deal with the Finnish record label SPINEFARM/UNIVERSAL. In February-March 2005, Eilera and Loïc record their first CD for Spinefarm Records - the 'Precious Moment' four songs Ep - in Helsinki. The already established 'Eilera style' melts more obviously with the metal roots of the duet. This recording is the starting-point of Eilera's collaboration with the producer Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Sentenced...), and with the musicians Antti Lehtinen -drums - Pasi Heikkilä - bass - Scotish celtic fiddle player Ian McCamy, and some other talented musicians, mainly Finnish. A new era has started for Eilera... The new album was composed and written between May and December 2005. In March 2006, the drums and bass were recorded at Finnvox studio, Helsinki, With Antti Lehtinen on drums again, and Tommi Saarikivii on bass. The main difference here? There was no producer this time. Indeed, this would be one of the main characteristics of this album: Eilera would produce her own album. Back home, Eilera, together with her work partner of all times Loïc Tézénas, will record all guitars –with Loïc on guitar-, as well as the fiddle lines, and vocals. (added guitars in studio later on) On fiddle was a newcomer this time: Tony Canton, a talented musician who lives in the centre of France, and who brought the Celtic fiddle lines. The last two studio sessions happened in December 2006. First Hip Studio, with two familiar faces to back Eilera and Loïc up: Hiili Hiilesmaa's and Juha Heininen's. This is where the recording of strings-ensemble was done, with Max Lilja back on cello. Then? Back to Finnvox for the final mix and mastering. Hiili added his personal touch to the final sound of the album, and Mika Jussila -another familiar man-of-the-situation- to the mastering. All in all, this album will confirm the main themes in Eilera's work: balance between Strength and Frailty, Ambiguity, closeness to Nature, the roots of these 'precious moments' in life. And her two obsessions of all times: Freedom and Beauty. |
